Start your journey with Tabla
Tabla courses are available for beginners, intermediate and advanced players, either one to one or in small groups.
Beginners start with an introduction to tabla, playing techniques, teentaal rhythm patterns and tuning the tabla. Our Intermediate course introduces new taals and improved finger skills, whilst our Advanced training further develops one to become a competant tabla player.
Tabla Courses
Shivantika offers a wide range of courses for Tabla, with all offerings tailored to your ability to grasp. If you learn quickly more advanced elements can be added.
Our Tabla courses are held in small groups or individually both in person and on-line usually in one hour weekly sessions by mutual arrangement.
Tabla Programme
Beginners
For Beginners we take them through Introduction of Tabla, Hand Positioning, Finger techniques, Knowledge of dayan bayan notations, close and open notations, Knowledge of basic rhythm patterns ,Introduction to the basics of Teentaal and how to tune your tabla.
Intermediate
After having the understandings of aspects of beginners one can learn various new Taals and different techniques of various like taals like Daadra, Keherwa, Jhaptaal, Teentaal Kayada improving finger skills and knowledge of lehera.
Advanced
In advance we help a participant to understand the techniques of accompanying music and also various intricacies of teentaal, complicated boles and help to train one to become a competent Tabla player.
About Tabla
The tabla is the percussion instrument most commonly used in north Indian classical music. The instrument consists of two drums, called bayan (left) and dayan (right) as per the hand they are most commonly played with. The drums consist of a layer of goatskin stretched over a metal or clay vessel.
Tabla has its own world of Kayda, paran, tukde etc. and also played widely as an accompanied instrument, Now a days it’s seen in commonly performed worldwide in fusion performances. Table not only sticks and follow the traditional Talim (learnings) but also have a flexibility to flow like water with musicians. It becomes easy to understand and play some of other percussion after having played Table for long time.
