About Kathak Dance
Kathak is one of the eight classical dance forms of India. Its very ancient with evidence of it being performed during Mahabharata times. There are many temples in India where the sculptures are in Kathak poses. Known for its flowing nature, it has seen many evolutions due to influences from invasions but due to it’s inclusive and simple nature it keeps it flowing like a river.
Kathak is accompanied by Tabla which provides rhythm and the Kathak ghonghrooes which are worn on the ankles enhance the rhythm as whatever the tabla is playing the dancer brings out using their feet drumming on the floor combined with the movement and dance of the hands and facial expressions. Kathak requires enormous focus of the mind such that the dancer becomes one with mind, body and emotions.
Many Bollywoood pieces get their inspiration from Kathak and as such Kathak practitioners are able to dance other forms with ease.
